×The beautiful Northland, renowned for its beautiful scenery and fantastic weather, is driven by a true spirit of community, and this spirit is obvious in the trajectory of industries.
Northland's job market is relatively small compared to other regions, but the lifestyle make it an attractive proposition for many new migrants prepared to perservere with job searching. The Northland is a small-medium size economy with a prominent primary sector and strong manufacturing base, it contributes 2.6% to national GDP and provides 3% of national employment.
The ageing population and young families attracted to the community atmosphere and climate, therefore the demand for health professionals, associate health professionals and caregivers is expected to continue growing at a steady pace.
Northland's main industries are tourism, pastoral farming, wood processing and marine engineering. Some of the world's most exclusive superyachts have been built in Whangarei. The harbour at Whangarei homes the Marsden Point Oil Refinery. Other industries around the region include cement manufacturing, wood products and dairy processing. Two thirds of the Northland's land area is used for pastoral farming, and tourism in the region is higher than the national average.
Northland is well known for its beautiful scenery, showcasing some of the best of New Zealand. It is not surprising that following health and community services are agriculture, fishing and forestry as Northland’s largest employing industries. Traditionally, agriculture has been the mainstay area of growth in Northland, and this looks set to continue. It is expected that the labour demand will move away from farm managers and towards more specialised staff such as skilled animal and horticultural workers and mobile plant operators.
Whangarei’s picturesque marina in the heart of the city makes it a Mecca for the international yachting community and provides a booming industry in boat building and repairing. Whangarei is home to the only foundry in Northland, providing marine, industrial and general engineering sectors with quality aluminium and steel for a strong manufacturing/trades sector.
The construction industry is expected to continue to grow strongly in Northland at a steady rate as an offset of the construction shortage in Auckland and as the community continues to thrive and grow, with requirements for specialist managers and engineering technicians as well as lower skilled construction workers.
