What is it like to work in Bay of Plenty?

The Bay of Plenty is one of the fastest growing regions in New Zealand – second only to Auckland in most recent years. Such growth intrinsically leads to increased job opportunities, and for that reason, the Bay of Plenty presents an attractive option for an enviable work/life balance.

There are many job opportunities in Bay of Plenty. Much like the neighbouring region of Waikato, Bay of Plenty’s construction industry is experiencing strong growth, which is driving a demand for skilled trades people and those with engineering backgrounds. Likewise, the expanding Bay population is fuelling an ongoing need for people to add to both the education and healthcare sectors. The niche healthcare area of elderly and aged care is a particular area of demand for talent in the Bay.

The geographical nature of the Bay of Plenty makes it ideal for agricultural and horticultural activities and, as such, both sectors are among the Bay’s largest employers providing various job opportunities. Forestry is a particular focal point given the large Pine tree plantations within the region. Similarly, the Kiwifruit industry is a major employer in the Bay - no surprise considering the region is known as the ‘Kiwifruit capital of the world’. Central to this is the area around the town of Te Puke, which is where the majority of the New Zealand’s kiwifruit orchards, packing facilities and cool stores are found. Kiwifruit from the Bay accounts for 90% of the 100 million trays New Zealand exports annually to global markets, making the region a significant contributor to the nation’s horticultural export success.

The bulk of kiwifruit exported from the Bay of Plenty is loaded on ships at the nearby Port of Tauranga. Built around a naturally sheltered, deepwater harbour, the port is one of New Zealand’s busiest, and the largest by sheer cargo volumes moved. The central location of the Port of Tauranga positions it as a major import/export hub and as a result a large employer providing lots of jos and work opportunites in the Mount Maunagnui/Tauranga area.
