Work to Residence Visas

Work to Residence visas in New ZealandThere are two main types of Work to Residence visas which enable you to work in New Zealand and then, after 24 months, apply for a residency visa.

Work to Residence: Long Term Skills Shortage

If you are qualified and skilled in an occupation for which New Zealand has a sustained and ongoing skill shortage, you may be eligible for a work visa under the Long Term Skill Shortage List Work Category.  You’ll need to meet the age, health and character requirements. All of these occupations are listed on the Long Term Skill Shortage List (also called the LTSSL), which is updated annually.  If you are successful, you will be eligible for a work visa for up to 30 months. Check if your occupation is on the Long Term Skills Shortage List.

Accredited Employers

If you have a job offer from an accredited employer in New Zealand, you can apply for a work visa for up to 30 months under the Talent (Accredited Employers) Work Category. When you have worked for a New Zealand accredited employer for two years you can apply for residence.

Accredited employers are employers that Immigration New Zealand have pre-approved who need skilled or talented workers from overseas. To become accredited, employers have to prove to Immigration New Zealand that they are financially viable, that they are committed to training and employing New Zealanders and that they have sound human resource and workplace policies and practices in place. Find out more about Talent (Accredited Employers) Work Category requirements

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

If you have skills, qualifications or experience that New Zealand needs you may be able to apply for a resident visa under the Skilled Migrant Category.

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is a points system based on several factors including your age, work experience, qualifications, and an offer of skilled employment. You must also be aged 55 or under, and meet English language, health, and character requirements.

If you have 140 points or over your EOI will be selected automatically for an Invitation to Apply (ITA). If you have 100-135 points you are able to submit an EOI but it may not be selected. In this range, the required number of points varies each fortnightly selection depending on demand.  If you have 100-135 points you'll be more likely to be successful if you have a job offer for skilled employmennt or if you claimed bonus points for work experience in an area of absolute skill shortage.

Immigration New Zealand’s list of points and bonus points can help you self-assess your application and evaluate how many points you could have if you undertake extra study or work experience, or get offered a job by a New Zealand employer.

There are two step to apply:

1)  First you will need to complete an Expression of Interest and submit it to Immigration New Zealand telling them about yourself, your family, your skills and your experience.
2)  If you have enough points and your Expression of Interest is accepted, Immigration New Zealand will send you an Invitation to Apply (ITA). You complete it, and return it with your supporting documents and fee to apply for your residency.
