Visas to Work

In some cases you will need a job offer in order to get a work visa in New ZealandYou’re likely to need a job or job offer to apply for a resident or temporary work visas.

If you work in an area of skills shortage or have specialist skills that are in demand in New Zealand, and you have a qualification that is comparable to those that New Zealand employers are familiar with, you’ll be amazed at the great career opportunities that are on offer here. All of the employers featured on Workhere are open to recruiting talented people from around the world that have skills that are in short supply here. New Zealand has talent shortages in many areas, so if you’re highly skilled and want to live and work here, the chances are you will be able to obtain a work visa when you have a job offer in place.

New Zealand offers a range of work visas. All work visas are temporary but some can lead to getting residency.

Essential Skills Work Visa

The essential skills work visa is for a temporary stay in New Zealand. The length of the visa depends on the labour market conditions and the terms of your job offer for employment.

If you have a job offer for an occupation that is on the Essential Skills in Demand lists (Immigration New Zealand’s occupational skills shortage lists) and your qualifications and experience match, you can apply for an Essential Skills work visa.

Immigration New Zealand reviews the Essential Skills in Demand lists regularly and is satisfied that employers are unable to find enough people with these relevant skills, qualifications and experience in New Zealand. This means that your employer will not be required to provide evidence of attempting to recruit New Zealanders.

Essential Skills in Demand

If your role is not on the Skills Shortage list but your employer has advertised the job in New Zealand and has been unsuccessful in finding a suitable New Zealand citizen or resident, you can apply for an essential skills work visa but your employer will need to provide supporting information to support their efforts to recruit New Zealanders in the first instance.

Essential Skills visas are intended to fill temporary skill gaps and therefore do not lead directly to a residence application. If you have an Essential Skills work visa based on a skilled job, you may qualify for a residency visa under the Skilled Migrant Category

For more information visit the Work in NZ section on the Immigration New Zealand website, which covers skills shortage areas, industry profiles, tips on job hunting and much more.
