About Propellerhead
Propellerhead started in 2002 to change the way software services were delivered in New Zealand. Fast-forward a few years and they now work with some of our countries largest entities, building interesting and challenging technology, and helping to improve the lives of New Zealanders every day.
They are a leading Kiwi software-services company working with large clients such as Auckland Transport, New Zealand Rugby, Spark, Skinny and New Zealand Post, across a range of technologies.
They are freethinkers and innovators - priding themselves as a technology partner to their clients, questioning the status quo, and understanding that great people shine when given the freedom to lead and do the right thing. This means they offer a supportive culture based on openness, communication, collaboration and flexibility.
Propellerhead has moved away from traditional company hierarchy, and practices a flat organisational structure that takes its influence from Holacracy. This change was made to be able to empower smart people and allow them to make their own decisions.
Work is organised around cross-functional, self-managing teams, each including roles needed to contribute to successful delivery of value. The most effective team size for is roughly 5 people, with each person playing one or more roles. This structure was adopted for its leanness and flexibility: as teams are internally self-organising, this allows them to focus on managing their work rather than people.
Their typical client engagements are large-scale, but often start small. They concentrate on the right combination of methodology, architecture, technology, and operating model. They believe software’s ‘natural state’ is live, in front of real users, and used for the purpose it is intended. The earlier they can deliver working software the sooner we are creating value. We are passionate advocates for open-source software, open data, and open ideas.
Propellerhead build solutions in a series of small increments, Propellerhead takes influence from Agile, Lean Start-up, Design Thinking, and Holacracy - with each iteration providing opportunity for adaption based on user behaviour. Continuous advances in technology allows them to utilise newer and better ways of solving problems for their clients and their users.
Working at Propellerhead means being surrounded by inspiring colleagues dedicated to mastering their craft and having a positive impact on the community through work. It’s about having the opportunity to be the best you can be. Not about movement up through a hierarchy (there isn't one) but personal improvement towards mastering craft of software development.
Propellerhead's team already consists of people from Switzerland, France, Austria, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Croatia, Slovakia, Italy, Spain and Germany, as well as from many more countries around the world. They are located in beautiful offices in downtown Auckland city.
